Geneva Roberta (Martin) Hardin was born January 18, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa to John Henry Martin, Sr. and Mae “Mary” Ethel (Davis) Martin. She was educated in the Des Moines Public School system where she graduated from East High School.

Geneva joined the world of work and was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Heather Manor Care Center. She was also a certified home care technician. She later became a Reading Recovery Teacher in the Des Moines Public School System, helping grade school youngsters learn to read.
