Lee Helen Simpson, affectionately known as Helen, was born in Jackson, MS on July 17, 1936. She graduated from East High School in Waterloo, IA She spent her childhood and early adult life in Waterloo, IA. She later moved to Des Moines in the early 1970’s and finally relocated to Scottsdale, AZ in May of 2018.
Ms. Helen retired from Firestone after 20 years of service as a tire builder. After her retirement, Helen enjoyed traveling, holding various positions on boards and affiliations throughout the Des Moines area; but mostly she enjoyed serving at her church, where she was on the Mother’s Board and taught Sunday School.
Ms. Helen was bless to have five wonderful children: Gilbert Green (Dee) of Des Moines, Dennis Green (Roslyn) of Cedar Rapids, Shaun Green (preceding her in death), Micah Green (Kristian) of Minneapolis, MN and Alycia Simpson-Reynolds (Willie) of Phoenix, AZ.
In her younger years Helen loved to bowl and was a participant in many leagues here in Des Moines. Her love of sports filtered down to her children and she took great pleasure in attending many sporting events of her children and grandchildren; along with watching her favorite Golden State Warriors and LeBron James. When asked who her favorite NFL team was she would always reply “Whosever winning” the game she was watching.
Ms. Helen loved cooking, socializing with her friends, and reading her bible – which was her favorite; but during the week her world would come to a drastic stop at 12:30 pm so she could watch Bold and Beautiful and then again at 3pm for Judge Judy!
Helen lived a wonderful life full of love, happiness, joy and a lot of fun. She enjoyed her last days spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends while a smile never left her face. Helen had always been known for starting a conversation and making new friends at a drop of a dime; this didn’t stop when she moved to Arizona! For the short time she was there she had a lot of adventures; she traveled, celebrated, danced, sang and made a boat load of friends who grew to love and will miss her dearly. To all her family and friends across the nation and the world who knew Ms. Helen truly experienced a wonderful, loving and cheerful queen who will be greatly missed.
Ms. Helen left to be with the Lord on January 6, 2019 and rejoined her parents G. Russell and Ethel Robinson; along with her two brothers, James and John Robinson and lastly, her son Shaun Green. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Gilbert Green, Dennis Green, Micah Green, Alycia Simpson-Reynolds; her siblings, Jerry Robinson, Jackie Robinson, Dorothy Robinson, Hazel Isabell, Betty Griffith; seven (7) grandchildren, five (5) great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
